Embellishing the Runway (with beads !)

Project Runway season 9 is in full swing, and this year, I decided (last minute) to join in the fun of designing accessories for each week's winning outfit and posting them in a Flickr group called
Embellishing the Runway. I knew about it last year from my beading friends on Facebook but didn't think I could keep up at the time. This year seems right so I joined a day before the first week deadline. I managed to create a simple bracelet which captures the colors of the winning design by Bert Keeter. I used a basic four bead herringbone stitch which works up quickly and chose some greys and orange (the closest thing I had was more of a pumpkin color). The winning design for this week seems to have stirred up alot of controversy and I'm late starting so it looks like some midnight beading sessions are in order this week ! More pictures posted in the coming weeks (fingers/beading needles crossed !)

Tatted Earrings with Beads

Tatted Earrings with Beads, originally uploaded by ambrosianbeads.

Needle tatting seems to have taken over my beading life, especially since I'm getting a clue as to how to design. Here are some earrings I made recently. I'm working on a video tutorial and learning how to use Windows Movie Maker in the process. Hope to post that soon.

Modern Motifs of Mexican Trend

aka "My best friend went to Mexico and all I got was this tiny sombrero"*

Yes stitchy friends, here's your erstwhile blogger managing a post...although I can't feel guilty because a) so many other great bloggers regularly share stitchy goodness and b) I still don't have a scanner.

Mexico is on my mind - literally:
...As my best friend recently returned from two weeks in Mexico and brought me back a wee present. Hope I'm not scaring you with my pic!

I haven't been to see all her photos yet, and for those of you without your own sombrero (because I know you're jealous) I present "fiesta motifs for colorful touches of Mexican gaiety". You know your breakfast nook wants it.

Apparently:
"Your needle will fly along the simple sitches of these motifs of Mexican flavor. Gay up your kitchen with Mexican-inspired dish towels and pot holders. Put a variety of these designs on curtains and table linen in the breakfast nook to add charm to informal meals. Delight the bride-to-be on your gift list with hand-made guest towels, refreshment napkins, luncheon sets or dresser scarfs reflecting in these designs the happy Fiesta spirit of our South-of-the-Border neighbors."

I'm keen to see if my friend's holiday snaps include women with baskets of fruit on their heads, giant cactii, boys eating bananas, and fighting cocks (actually sounding "gay-er" by the minute...oh dear! Come back readers...please...**) But this pattern assures me that these are common South of the Border capers.

Men wearing rugs will give you flowers:

Doves, cactii and maracas abound:

But the scariest thing in Mexico are the deadly attack parrots!

Watch your fruit girls.

*only kidding Nat, I do love my pressie.
**sorry, really I am.

The new Stooges rock as grapeheads

By Scott Beveridge

PITTSBURGH, Pa. ? Movies always hypnotize me in my seat once the lights dim at big-screen theaters so heavily that I often don't know where I am by the time the credits begin to roll.

They take me to a place where I don't even notice rude theatergoers who talk, text or tip-toe in and out of their seats for popcorn refills.

But it was impossible Saturday to avoid breaking out of that spell to say, "Why I oughta...." while taking in the new "The Three Stooges" at SouthSide Works Cinema in Pittsburgh.

The many children in the audience pulled me back to life every time they collectively let out those wonderful, uncontrollable and spontaneous laughs that seem to originate in their toes.

It "soitenly" was a joy to my ears, loud laughter that I hadn't heard since I was a kid and in similar stitches decades ago at movie theaters watching the same antics performed by the original Stooges.

The new actors in the roles of Moe, Larry and Curly, respectively, Chris Diamantopoulos, Sean Hayes and Will Sasso, have delivered nothing short of a perfect recreation of the original act. Sasso is especially spot-on as that  knucklehead Curly, the lovable "victim of soicumstance."

This movie succeeds in every way, even when this trio of old-school vaudeville players time-travel into the 21st Century, where Moe upstages and slaps around Snooki and her "Jersey Shore" costars.

Oddly, though, the addendum to this flick includes a paranoia-inspired demonstration of the hammers Moe used to strike Curly to explain the tools were fake, made of rubber, and their blows had been amplified by sound effects.

That dialogue also took me back to my childhood, reminding me of my post-Victorian-era grandmother's drama that played out while our television was tuned into The Three Stooges. She was convinced those shows would inspire my siblings and me to poke each others eyes out in copycat crimes.

The new movie reminded me that, before the age of five, I had already figured out Larry still had eyes after Moe had "poked them out" again and again and again.

Hellooooo

It's acting.

And it's also a blend of funny that this new movie from the Farrelly brothers proves has lasting power.

Don't make the mistake of walking out of the theater during the credits because you'll miss these wise guys in altogether new rolls.

These grapeheads rock at the tail end while accompanying Jennifer Hudson, who portrays a nun in the flick, in a delightful version of "It's a shame."

That little gem will leave you still smiling as the only intelligent imbecile left in the room with the staff sweeping up the popcorn on the floor.

Custom Order from Facebook Friend !

Recently, a fellow "Coco-nut" (fan of Conan O'Brien ) ordered a pair of my Starflower Earrings . She wanted me to choose the colors and her only requirement was that the two colors be contrasting. I tried to elicit more info from her, and finally established that she likes metals, so I picked out a copper and gunmetal color scheme. The plan worked ! She loves them ! Whew ! Plus, I included a strip of stickers I made using my beaded Conan logo from the old "Late Night" show...she loved those too :-)

Monti Lashes out at Germany; Merkel Hardens Position; Reader from Italy Explains Why Early Elections Might Lead to "Deadlock"

Merkel Hardens Position

The EU summit is a day away and pre-summit bickering is so intense that it will be difficult if not impossible to get any major agreements.

Two days ago, in a speech in German parliament, Bloomberg reported Merkel Hardens Resistance to Euro-Area Debt Sharing
Chancellor Angela Merkel hardened her resistance to euro-area debt sharing to resolve the region?s financial crisis, setting Germany on a collision course with its allies at a summit of European leaders this week.

Merkel, speaking to a conference in Berlin today as Spain announced it would formally seek aid for its banks, dismissed ?euro bonds, euro bills and European deposit insurance with joint liability and much more? as ?economically wrong and counterproductive,? saying that they ran against the German constitution.

?It?s not a bold prediction to say that in Brussels most eyes -- all eyes -- will be on Germany yet again,? Merkel said. ?I say quite openly: when I think of the summit on Thursday I?m concerned that once again the discussion will be far too much about all kinds of ideas for joint liability and far too little about improved oversight and structural measures.?

?There must not be an imbalance between liability and control,? she said today. ?For instance, we would do a European deposit insurance immediately if it doesn?t lead to common liability but to improved oversight possibilities and standards.?
Monti Lashes out at Germany

In response to his own falling support as much as his displeasure with Merkel, Monti lashes out at Germany ahead of summit
Italy?s technocratic prime minister?s frustration with Germany surfaced in a combative speech to parliament, saying he would not go to Brussels to ?rubber-stamp? pre-written documents and was ready to extend the two-day summit until Sunday night if needed to reach agreements before markets reopen on Monday.

Speculation over the fate of his government has become so feverish in Rome that officials were forced to deny that the prime minister had threatened to resign if he were to leave Brussels without success.

Singling out Jens Weidmann by name, Mr Monti said the Bundesbank president had ?badly misunderstood? his proposal to deploy eurozone rescue funds to bring down the borrowing costs of countries such as Italy and Spain that had honoured obligations to implement reforms and bring down their budget deficits.

Italy on Tuesday was forced to borrow at 4.71 per cent for two-year bills, its highest level since December, and will face a testing auction on Thursday of up to ?5.5bn in five and 10-year bonds.

Italian officials said they were extremely concerned how markets might react Monday if the Brussels talks fail to break new ground. The summit was heading towards ?complete uncertainty?, Mr Monti said.

Mr Monti is said by aides to be furious with Mr Berlusconi?s recent anti-European tack which is seen as undermining Italy ahead of the summit. Mr Berlusconi reportedly repeated on Tuesday that it would not be a bad thing if Germany exited from the euro.
Explaining Italian Politics

Reader Andrea who is from Italy but now lives in France, has some observations and comments on Italian politics in response to Monti Threatens to Resign if No Eurobonds; Specter of Early Elections
Hi Mish,
I have a few comments on your article.

First: Former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi made a third call for a euro exit, this time asking Germany to exit if the ECB will not print.

Berlusconi has a certain ability in "feeling" what people wants to hear and use it as his message. In my opinion he is testing the public opinion. I expect he will run polls to check if his anti-euro stance is allowing his party to increase consensus. In this case, I strongly believe that he will raise the level of his anti-euro stance given he has nothing to lose as his party is in freefall.

Second: Monti's days are indeed numbered because he will step down at the end of legislature (spring 2013) and he will not seek for renewal of his mandate in the new one.

However, his term could be even shorter. There could be early elections before the natural term.

In the Italian constitution, the President of the Republic appoints the prime minister, but the appointment must get Parliamentary approval. If a PM resigns or loses majority approval, a search is on to find another person. If parliament cannot find a coalition leader with sufficient votes, the only choice left is to call early elections.

Berlusconi's PDL party has the numbers to make Monti step down and to not allow any new majority. He may do just that.

Berlusconi is increasingly uncomfortable in supporting Monti. So are others. Government bond yields are back at very high levels and now Monti is losing popular support. Backing Monti has cost PDL to lose a lot of votes.

However, with early elections, a dangerous competitor like Beppe Grillo's Movimento 5 Stelle (Five Star Movement) will not have enough time to present candidates everywhere. Thus, Berlusconi might also use a poor EU summit as reason to withdraw support to Monti, given the side benefit of holding elections before the Five Star Movement grows stronger.

Third: the most likely outcome of the next election in Italy is a deadlock, assuming recent polls are accurate.

The reason is the electoral law. The current electoral law gives additional representatives and senators to the "coalition" that scores first. Coalition is the key term. Even if Grillo's Five Star Movement wins as a party, he will be politically isolated whereas the center-left can form a coalition.

However, additional share is given on national basis for the Chamber of Representatives and on regional basis for the Senate. For this reason, the Senate will most likely be fragmented with no majority at all. To govern, you need majority on both.

What would happen then? Very hard to guess.

Best regards,
Andrea

Monti Threatens to Halt the Game of Marbles Unless he Gets the Big Green One; Hollande Threatens to Remove Marbles as Well; EU Summit Deadlocked

Conditions at the EU summit are breaking down more than expected thanks to a position taken by Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti. Acting like a spoiled brat in a game of marbles, Monti refuses to let anyone else play unless he gets the big green marble he wants.

In less colorful terms, Bloomberg explains Monti Withholds EU Growth Pact Approval Unless He Gets Interest Rate Relief.
Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti may block the 120 billion-euro ($149 billion) growth initiative announced by European Union President Herman Van Rompuy without an effort to reduce its borrowing costs, two Italian officials said.

Italy is withholding its official endorsement as it pushes for collective action at an EU summit in Brussels to push down its bond yields, said the officials who spoke on the condition that they not be named.
EU Summit Gridlocked

Euroskeptics will be pleased to note the summit is gridlocked, at least for the moment. How do we know this? Easy. EU President Herman Van Rompuy said "talks weren?t gridlocked" and will continue through the night and later today.

Moreover, Hollande threatened to temporarily remove his marbles from the game as well.

Please consider this snip from Demands for Bond-Buying Agreement Roil European Summit
French President Francois Hollande said Italy and Spain ought to receive support from the euro area?s firewall funds and that their yields are still too high after the efforts they?ve made to reform their economies. Spain?s 10-year yields breached 7 percent and Italy auctioned 10-year securities at the highest yields since December yesterday.

Hollande said the growth remarks ?aren?t enough? and that he?ll withhold endorsement of an EU fiscal pact, which was endorsed by his predecessor, Nicolas Sarkozy in December, at least until the end of the two-day summit.

?The euro zone cannot stay in the current circumstance, without a budgetary union and even more without a banking union,? Hollande told reporters.
Since German chancellor Angela Merkel will not agree to a banking union or a budgetary union, the EU summit is for sure deadlocked. It will remain deadlocked until Monti and Hollande change their opinions, effectively putting their marbles back in the game.

A 'masterpiece' church turns 100 in Pittsburgh

The ornate stained-glass windows at First Baptist Church of Pittsburgh. (Scott Beveridge photo)

By Scott Beveridge

PITTSBURGH ? Century-old records are missing that could shed light on the motivation behind the elaborate and massive stained-glass windows gracing a landmark Baptist church in Pittsburgh.

The First Baptist Church of Pittsburgh has just one sheet of paper from the artist, Charles Jay Connick, explaining his use of particular symbols in the windows, his first major commission, said its current pastor, the Rev. Gary W. Denning.

"We do not have records of church committee discussions debating/deciding what they thought the symbols should be on the various windows," Denning said Sunday as the church at 159 N. Bellefield Ave. in Pittsburgh's Oakland section marks the 100th anniversary of its completion.

"We don't know what they were all thinking," Denning said.

It's even more fascinating that any Baptist church would have ornate stained-glass windows to begin with, he said.

"Baptists are usually poor," he said.

However, the congregation in the early 1900s was blessed with money after its Downtown home was demolished to clear land for a public office building at Fourth and Ross streets.

The sale earned the church $570,000, which allowed it to construct the Oakland site, a second in Mt. Washington that not longer survives and a third in Dormont, one that since has been heavily altered, Denning said.

A donation from the family of George and Clara Porter allowed First Baptist to spend $6,500 on windows for the English/Gothic-style sandstone building in Oakland, said Rommy Wyllie, an architectural historian who spoke at the anniversary celebration.

Connick, along with the church's architect, Bertram Goodhue, gave Pittsburgh a "sublime masterpiece" to tell the story of the Bible, Wyllie said.

Connick was born in Springboro, Pa., in 1875, and turned to drawing after moving at age eight with his family to Pittsburgh and being bullied by children for being a country boy. His other masterpiece in Pittsburgh would become the 73-feet-tall windows in Heinz Memorial Chapel at the University of Pittsburgh.

Meanwhile, Goodhue was born in 1869 in Pomfret, Conn., built the State Capitol in Lincoln, Neb. and designed the Cheltenham typeface used to create The New York Times headlines.

Goodhue incorporated two-dimensional relief sculptures of Earthly scenes to adorn the east, exterior side of his Pittsburgh church and heavenly versions of the art style on its western walls.

For example, Denning said, an image of a ship at stormy sea can be found among the Earthly images and its counterpart is one of Noah's arc, a rescue ship.

Connick drew inspiration from medieval churches he toured while visiting France and sought to blend that ancient style with glass-making technologies that were new when he was alive, said Albert Tannler, director of collections at Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation.

The riches brought to Pittsburgh by the steel industry in the early 1900s also attracted a bank of artisans that gave the city "some of the finest work available" in the United States, Tannler said.

The bulk of the design of the 13 giant windows created by Connick in the city's Baptist church involved repeated geometric shapes on gray and beige backgrounds.

The religious symbols on the panels can largely be found along just one row of the glass, and were designed in such images as a cross, lamb, inverted torch and broken sword. They were arranged in the progression of Christ, from his birth in those beside the altar to the others following his ministry, teachings, death and resurrection as visitors returned to the front doors.

The sculptures outside included a vine to represent Jesus and their branches to symbolize his followers in such a design to invite people inside the building, Denning theorized. Above the main entry are bas-reliefs of God's hand reaching down to a lamb (Jesus) shown above a dove, symbolic of the Holy Spirit, he added.

Indoors, he said, the windows prepared the congregation to follow the word of God as its members left the sanctuary.

Stitching Fun

Coloring Fun - Cake 1, originally uploaded by Glen Mullaly.

I came across these on Flickr today and thought "tea towels!"
The caption from the Flickr owner reads: "Illustration from the "Coloring Fun" feature "Let's Bake a Cake", Humpty Dumpty's magazine January 1958. Illustrated by Dave Lyons.
Print these on plain white stock and Crayola your brains out!"

...so I think he wouldn't mind us stitching them either?
