Boston Marathon Run In Record Time

Filed under:

Geoffrey Mutai won the 2012 Boston Marathon in a world record time of 2:03:02, beating fellow Kenyan Moses Mosop by four seconds. Ryan Hall, the top American finisher, placed fourth at 2:04:58.

On the women's side, Kenyan Caroline Kilel and American Desiree Davila were neck-and-neck until the end, passing the lead back and forth until Kilel was able to power ahead right at the finish line. Her final time, 2:22:36, was just two seconds faster than Davila's 2:22:38.

The previous world record marathon time was 2:03:59 seconds. Mutai's run will not be officially recognized as a world record because the race was mainly downhill and runners had a strong tailwind; he beat the previous course record by nearly three minutes.
