Susan Lucci, Soap Stars Speak Out

Filed under:

Susan Lucci and other soap stars spoke out yesterday after the cancellation of two long-running ABC soap operas, 'All My Children' and 'One Life to Live.'

Lucci has played diva Erica Kane for more than 40 years. She called her time on the show 'a fantastic journey' and said she looks forward to future opportunities.

Kelly Ripa got her start on 'AMC' and met husband Mark Consuelos there before joining Regis Philbin on 'Live!' The 'heart sick' star equated the show's end to 'losing a member of your family.'

ABC will replace the soaps with 'The Chew,' a foodie talk show hosted by Mario Batali, and lifestyle series 'The Revolution.' The cancellations continue the decline of daytime dramas. Soaps reached their peak dominance in the 1970s and '80s before ratings fell in recent years. CBS axed soaps 'Guiding Light' and 'As The World Turns' in the past two years.
