Japan Earthquake Today, April 7

Filed under:

A powerful earthquake aftershock rocked northeastern Japan today, four weeks after a devastating 9.0-magnitude quake that triggered a deadly tsunami. Today's 7.4-magnitude quake led to an immediate tsunami warning for a wave of up for six feet; the warning has since been lifted.

Government broadcasters warned residents to run for higher ground and get away from the shoreline.

The quake hit off the coast of Miyagi; there have been no reports of damage. Tremors were felt in Tokyo, where buildings shook for about a minute.

Today's aftershock was centered 41 miles from Sendai, one of the worst hit regions during last month's quake, and 73 miles from Fukushima, where radiation fears continue to grow. Workers were temporarily evacuated from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
