Gabby Giffords Speaks This Week

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head January 8, is speaking. Politico reports Giffords asked for a piece of toast with breakfast Monday and the congresswoman's chief of staff confirms her boss is making verbal requests.

This is the first confirmation Giffords is able to speak following the shooting. She was in intensive care in Tucson, Ariz., before being transferred to a Houston rehabilitation center.

Astronaut husband Mark Kelly, who last week announced he would return to space this spring, says his wife is recovering at 'lightning speed' and enjoying three meals a day 'even though it's hospital food.'

Kelly's shuttle launch is scheduled for April 19. He expects Giffords' to be there for lift-off, saying he's already consulted with her doctors.
