Etsy Front Page Happy Dance !

Fellow Etsy Beadweaver, Crownrose Gems, posted this treasury a few days ago and today it spent a short time on the front page of Etsy.com ! My Venezia bracelet is part of the collection which is based on the popular Millenium trilogy by Swedish author, Stieg Larsson. I wouldn't have know about my front page appearance if it hadn't been for Statsy.com. I totally forgot about the fact that I linked it to my Facebook profile and besides generating an email to me, it automatically posted to Facebook ! Very handy indeed !

BIG SHOP UPDATE!!

BIG shop update tonight at 8pm EST: necklaces, magnets, new prints, and handspun yarn!

It's all the goodies I have been meaning to post for quite some time now.

I had time today due to one of my New Year's resolutions: to devote more time to my Etsy shop and make it (and art/crafting in general) more of a priority in my life. In order to accomplish this goal, I decided to take 2 days off a week from work to focus on art. Since I'm not paying rent anymore (I'm living in a house now.), I don't have a huge budget and can afford to not work so many hours at my day job. It's the first day of my new plan, and already it has been working out wonderfully! I woke up at 6am because I was so excited about my day off from the job and working at home, ha ha.

Some of my other goals for the new year? Get back into painting. Draw/be creative daily. Make 1,000 Etsy sales. Teach an online screen printing course. Spend more time with my baby dog and my parents. Take more photographs...

Some of these are pretty lofty goals (1,000 sales?!), but I am determined to make my dreams come true this year! Wish me luck! What are some of your goals for the new year?

Retro kitchen delights

For as long as I can remember I've had a real weakness for retro/vintage crockery. Left to my own devices and without thought or care for life essentials such as food, bills and rent, I could quite happily part with significant chunks of my budget on more vintage kitchen accessories than I could possibly ever hope to use in a lifetime.

I guess part of my love of pieces such as these is the sense of childhood nostalgia they evoke. The colours, patterns and images prevalent in pieces by Hornsea, Staffordshire,Denby, Turi Gramstad Oliver and the like are a tangible link to grandmothers china cabinets, fathers mugs, old storybooks. It is a style and form of artwork that must have imprinted on me at an early age, and that I still respond to with a feeling of lighthearted joy.
It is with no small measure on happiness that I can claim not to remember the last time I bought a 'new' item of crockery, and that my kitchen shelves are bursting with a mismatched assortment of flea market finds.
I plan to start experimenting with some of these design elements in a series of sketches/collages soon.

1. Ceramic pestle and mortar,2.Creamer,3.Pots,4.Owly tea,
5.Tea for 3,6.? 7. Hornsea mug collection, 8. Hornsea mugs ,9.?

Apologies for the couple I forgot to make note of....

walkers 705

walkers 705, originally uploaded by drewzel.

Hi Stitchy friends,
I scanned this one ages ago and promptly forgot about it...hopeless aren't I? I found it in my Flickr just now. I don't have many Walker's transfers but I do like their style, they are more "realistic" than the stylised animals of Vogart and Aunt Martha's (which I also adore.) It depends what you're looking for. I'm guessing these date from around the 1940's and I can't even remember where I got them now! Another good thing about Walker's is that they always appear to give you double copies of the transfer sheet, which is a nice bonus, so usually the ones I've found, even if one sheet is used, the other will usually be intact. Hurrah!

And because our kitty friend on rollerskates is a popular motif...here you are:

Battle of the Birth Certificates

Filed under:

Potential 2012 presidential candidate Donald Trump isn't sure Barack Obama is really an American and wants the president to show his birth certificate. Informed that Obama's birth certificate has been available online for more than three years, the real estate mogul released his own birth certificate, which shows Trump was born June 14, 1946, at the Jamaica Hospital in New York.

But--wait! The birth certificate released by Trump isn't official. Politico reports that if it were an official copy, 'it'd be marked with the seal of the Department of Health, as well as the signature of the city registrar,' both of which the document lacks.

Obama's birth certificate shows he was born August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii. It has the official raised seal and is stamped on the back by the Hawaii state registrar.

EBW Members Nearly Meet !

A couple days ago I got a Facebook message from a fellow Etsy Beadweaver, Rosita aka CrownRoseGems. She was visiting the Washington, DC area and I felt very honored that she wanted to make a special trip to my fiber co-op to see my beadwork. We nearly made a connection, but plans didn't favor our meeting in person. However, she was able to visit the Potomac Fiber Arts Gallery in the Torpedo Factory Art Center, and graciously complimented my jewelry that she saw while she was there. Please take a look at her beautiful beadwork here . I hope we do get to meet sometime and I hope I get to meet other beadweavers too. My place is always open for a visit from a fellow bead fanatic !

Shop Update: Totes and Bunnies!

Today has been a great day off from my day job, and I've gotten so much accomplished! I cleaned the house, ran errands, and took about 150 photos for the Etsy shop! It was a fun and productive day, and after the shop update I plan to start working on my new book/zine/journal/comic thing that I hope to finish by the end of the year. I'm still working out the final details on its theme, but I hope to have it solidified soon so I can really start rolling!

Hope you had a great day too! :)

Gallery show necklaces

Yesterday was the jury day for the big holiday show at Potomac Fiber Arts Gallery . I was on the jury panel and had fun scrutinizing all the great fiber art that passed under my nose. I am good with detail and was able to spot tiny flaws in knitting, beadwork and sewing. If I could only get paid to do that every day ! Anyway, our gallery has an unbelievable amount of beautiful fiber works to wear, view or use and there is something for everyone on the shopper's gift list. I got 35 items accepted into the show which lasts through December.

Vintage summer

In honour of the most gorgeous summer weather we've been having in the UK for the last week, here's a collection of images that give me good summer vibes. They're all examples of a vintage/ethereal type post-processing treatment that I really like, has a very nostalgic and soft summery feel about it. I've experimented a little to try and replicate the look of this with some of my own pictures, but haven't really been satisfied with many of the results so far - can't quite get the same soft pastel feel happening. Shooting in RAW on a 50mm with slight overexposure seems to be a good start

Added to my 'Vintage summer' gallery on flickr - check here for photo credits :)

Custom Order from Facebook Friend !

Recently, a fellow "Coco-nut" (fan of Conan O'Brien ) ordered a pair of my Starflower Earrings . She wanted me to choose the colors and her only requirement was that the two colors be contrasting. I tried to elicit more info from her, and finally established that she likes metals, so I picked out a copper and gunmetal color scheme. The plan worked ! She loves them ! Whew ! Plus, I included a strip of stickers I made using my beaded Conan logo from the old "Late Night" show...she loved those too :-)

"Three of Us"

silkscreen, found paper, acrylic, pastel, and charcoal
30" x 20"

I made this piece a little while ago...last month, maybe? I still need to figure out a way to frame it. Framing is expensive for something that big! Maybe I will just stick it up on the wall with velcro, ha ha, I've done that before with really large pieces. I'm trying to work looser, and this one was really fun to make.

Today is eBay day. I'm so not in the mood to list things on eBay; it's annoying, but at least it will be good to get rid of some stuff (mostly childhood toys found in my parents' house) and make a little extra cash for new house stuff (artist made wallpaper, art, ikea furniture, etc.). I hope I get motivated in the next few minutes and start putting things up!

How do you make art?

So I just finished self-publishing my book this afternoon, and now I am in need of a new project. The seeds of my new ideas are just beginning, but I need your help as I begin to develop the ideas a little bit further...

What have you always wondered about art and artmaking? What are some questions you would ask if you knew someone would have the definitive answers to them? Please leave some examples of questions you or someone else might ask in the comments section.

Some examples: What is art? What is good art? What is bad art? Are photographs art? What do you wear to an art opening? Etc...

Thanks in advance for your input!!

Joan Collins, Liz Taylor Competition

Filed under:

Joan Collins has been married five times; Elizabeth Taylor, eight times to seven men. When Collins divorced fourth husband Peter Holm, her longtime friend sent a joking note: 'I'm still ahead by three.'

Collins responded that she would 'catch up' with Taylor but at age 77 and married for nine years to Percy Gibson, 32 years her junior, it looks like Collins will forever remain second to Taylor.

In the days following Taylor's death from congestive heart failure at age 79, memories have poured in from celebrities. Collins and Taylor were friends for decades, sharing a 'salty turn of phrase' and British sense of humor.

The best quote came from fellow '50s star Debbie Reynolds, whose husband left her for Taylor: 'Women liked her and men adored her--my husband included.'

A touch of Vietnam in Pittsburgh

A bowl of tasty sate soup with peanut sauce special served at Tram's Kitchen in Pittsburgh (Scott Beveridge photo)

By Scott Beveridge

PITTSBURGH ? The host of an established Vietnamese restaurant in Pittsburgh is known for rushing his customers to a seat in his tiny storefront business that, from the outside, almost resembles a steelworkers' bar.

The sign in Vietnamese above the door to Tram's Kitchen in the city's Bloomfield section holds the first clue that Iron City does not flow from the taps here and is served with pickled egg appetizers.

The doors give way to long and narrow walls painted robins egg blue and lined with black lacquer artwork featuring mother of pearl designs of butterflies and fish.

Within seconds of being seated the greeter hands me a menu and quickly recommends the spicy sate soup. I order spring rolls and follow his lead, ordering the sate, even though I had come here with pho on my mind.

Pho is a broth soup featuring chicken, beef or shrimp and served widely across Vietnam, where it is considered the national dish. It's typically better stewed with American meat, which, thanks to hormones and antibiotics, is more plump and juicy than the scrawny chicken and beef found in Southeast Asia.

I was unaware of sate, and more familiar with satay, or skewers of beef and chicken served in a golden brown hot sauce at Thai restaurants. But it's apparently the same flavoring used at Tram's, which is probably the closest thing to an authentic Vietnamese restaurant in southwestern Pennsylvania.

The wait was brief for the food in this restaurant with two rows of tables covered with green and white plastic tablecloths. A small television screams an unrecognizable game show from the counter beside the cash drawer. Then only thing missing from the place is an ancestral altar, something that can be found in nearly every house and business in Vietnam. The altars are where everyone places offerings of fruit and incense to honor their deceased parents and grandparents.

Tram's spring rolls have sticky, not fried, rice wrappers. They are plump and delicious, too, and likely healthier than those served dripping in grease. This raw version is what sets Vietnamese rolls apart from the others. Mine are perfectly filled with pork, shrimp, rice and lemon grass and cost just $1.95 apiece.

I could have eaten a half dozen of them dipped in peanut sauce tinged with red hot pepper jelly. However, it was imperative to save room for that fantastic large bowl of soup, which brought the check to $12.95.

L.L. Bean Free Shipping Year-Round

Filed under:

The downside of online and catalog shopping is shipping fees. Great bargains can be found but when it comes time to place your order, prepare to pay for timely delivery. Now one mail-order retailer is nixing those fees.

As of today, L.L. Bean has eliminated two- to five-day shipping fees with no minimum order and no end date. Two-day shipping is $15; free shipping does not apply to large items like kayaks or furniture.

The move pressures other retailers to do the same and aligns with Zappos.com, known for its free shipping to and from.

A comScore analyst told the AP 'three-quarters of consumers say that they will abandon their purchase when they can't get free shipping.' L.L. Bean surely hopes that with free shipping, customers will order more items, more often.

Remember Hobbytex?

Today's transfers are a recent op-shop (aka thrift store) find. A pack of Hobbytex iron-on transfers, simply marked "No. 302 children designs". They were wrapped up in a plastic bag when I bought them, so I couldn't check what was in there until I got it home, and lo and behold:

More Vogart - a sheet of "Jolly Farmyard Scenes" (aka Vogart 705) and a mixture of kitty and doggy patterns from Vogart 102 and the days of the week kitties. Does anyone know how Vogart patterns ended up being licensed to Hobbytex and Made in Australia*? I know Vogart used to make fabric paint at one stage too... I might have to go a-Google-ing Hobbytex.

I think there's a sheet missing from the pack as the other sheets are marked B, C and D. The third sheet I have I'm guessing is a Hobbytex original, as I've never seen it before, and the designs defintely seem to be geared towards fabric painting rather than embroidery. I like the designs though, they're good and "boyish": sailboats, racing cars, a rodeo rider and an assortment of old aeroplanes.

So if the wee boys in your life don't want a kitteh or a doggie, then I think this Spitfire-like fighter plane is the way to go!

*(..as the patterns proclaim. I like seeing "Made in Australia" on things.)

PS. Yes, I realise that the flags and the winning cup are still upside down on the first car pic, but I know my stitchy friends have the technology to overcome this.
