The downside of online and catalog shopping is shipping fees. Great bargains can be found but when it comes time to place your order, prepare to pay for timely delivery. Now one mail-order retailer is nixing those fees.As of today, L.L. Bean has eliminated two- to five-day shipping fees with no minimum order and no end date. Two-day shipping is $15; free shipping does not apply to large items like kayaks or furniture.
The move pressures other retailers to do the same and aligns with Zappos.com, known for its free shipping to and from.
A comScore analyst told the AP 'three-quarters of consumers say that they will abandon their purchase when they can't get free shipping.' L.L. Bean surely hopes that with free shipping, customers will order more items, more often.
