Erin Go Bragh!

Filed under:

As an Erin, my favorite St. Patrick's Day expression is 'Erin Go Bragh!' But what does it mean?

'Erin Go Bragh' is an anglicized version of the Gaelic 'Éirinn go Brách' (modern Irish: 'Éire go Brách') or 'Ireland Forever' and expresses allegiance to Ireland.

The image most associated with 'Erin Go Bragh' comes from a group of Irish-American U.S. Army deserters during the Mexican-American war. The men, known as Saint Patrick's Battalion, flew a green flag with a gold harp.

The expression also inspired an eponymous song about a Scot mistaken for an Irishman: 'Well I am not a Pat though in Ireland I've been/ Nor am I a Paddy though Ireland I've seen/ But were I a Pat, now, what's that at a'?/ For there's many's the bold hero from Erin-go-bragh.'
