Mazda 6 Recall Over Spider Webs

Car recalls are nothing new these days but Mazda's latest recall may surprise many: the Japanese auto maker has recalled 65,000 Mazda 6 cars over spiders.

The yellow sac spider likes to build its nest in a vent connected to the fuel tank system, potentially causing a fire risk due to fuel tank cracks and leaks. More than 50,000 recalled Mazda 6 cars are in the United States; an additional 15,000 are in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

Affected Mazda 6 cars are 2009-2010 models. No accidents have been linked to the spiders but Mazda identifies 20 cases in which spider webs were found in vents. All of the reported cases occured in cars with 4-cylinder engines.

Owners of recalled vehicles will be notified by letter this month. Dealers will inspect cars and attach a spring that prevents spiders from entering the vent.
