Mediterranean Diet For Your Health

We've known for years that a Mediterranean diet has health benefits like reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke. The lifestyle is also linked to healthy weight maintenance.

A study in the March 15 Journal of the American College of Cardiology credits the Mediterranean diet with a lower risk of spikes in blood pressure and blood sugar, calling the diet 'strongly associated with decreased metabolic syndrome risk.'

A Mediterranean diet relies heavily on healthy fats like olive oil and unprocessed grains, produce and fish. Red meat, salt and butter are limited. A sample Mediterranean food pyramid places whole grains at the base and red meat and sweets in the 'use sparingly' category. Only four percent of Americans currently eat the recommended nine servings of fruits and vegetables daily.
