Mubarak Resigns, Egypt Celebrates

Filed under:

Egyptians are celebrating tonight after President Hosni Mubarak stepped down. Crowds in Cairo's Tahrir Square, many of whom had camped out through 18 days of protest, waved Egyptian flags and chanted 'Egypt is free!' and 'God is Great!'

News broke this morning that Mubarak had fled to Sharm el-Sheikh, a resort community on the Red Sea, and hours later, it was reported the military had assumed control of Egypt. Mubarak's resignation ends 30 years of a constant state of emergency, which the military pledged to lift.

Google executive Wael Ghonim, whose Facebook page helped trigger the uprising, thanked Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg for providing the tools that led to revolution. Nobel Peace laureate Mohammed ElBaradei called today the 'greatest' of his life.
