Catholics ages 18 to 59 are obliged to fast today, while all Catholics over age 14 must abstain from meat. Fasting rules do not apply to the ill or young children.
American Catholic defines fasting as 'partaking of only one full meal,' although smaller portions of food not equivalent to a meal are allowed at breakfast and noontime. Fasting is seen as a way to clarify thoughts and repent for the past year's transgressions.
The other Catholic fast day is Good Friday, while the no-meat rule is observed every Friday. Eggs, dairy, fish and meat products like chicken broth are allowed.
