Earthquake, Tsunami Devastate Japan

Filed under:

A massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake shook Japan this afternoon, the biggest to hit the nation in 140 years. The quake triggered a devastating 32-foot tsunami that swept away homes, cars, buildings and boats along the northeast coast.

Hundreds of people are dead and many more reportedly trapped in collapsed buildings. The Japanese government declared a state of emergency at a nuclear power station after its cooling system failed; there have been no reports of leaked radiation.

The quake sparked multiple fires and tens of thousands of people have evacuated. Prime Minister Naoto Kan said the earthquake caused 'tremendous damage.'

The US Pacific coast is bracing for tsunami waves, the first of which hit Hawaii at only a foot higher than normal.
