Marijuana-Schizophrenia Link

marijuana schizophrenia linkCan smoking marijuana lead to early-onset psychosis? A study by the University of New South Wales in Australia found that that people who smoked pot developed psychotic disorders like schizophrenia nearly 3 years earlier than people who did not smoke the drug.

More than 22,000 people took part in the study, published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, including nearly 8,200 participants who used marijuana and had a psychotic illness.

What does this mean? The study concludes that there is 'evidence for a relationship between cannabis use and earlier onset of psychotic illness' and supports 'the hypothesis that cannabis use plays a causal role in the development of psychosis in some patients.'

Medical marijuana is legal in 15 states and Washington, DC.
